Read-Aloud Teaching Tips

Give students multiple opportunities outside of simply reading a book to practice their oral skills!

Fluency Idol, Classroom Karaoke, Open Mic Night

Have patience! Be slow to correct a child while they are reading aloud- see if they realize their mistake before intervening.

Be specific on designating times and places around the classroom for students to read-aloud without bothering their peers.

Students love to have alternative seating!

Allow time in the lesson to offer students a moment to give feedback or share personal connections

Children love to talk about themselves!

Ask students to close their eyes while another student reads aloud. This allows students to make predictions and allows the book to come alive in their minds!

Have a diverse library in your classroom for children to choose from whenpicking a book to read-aloud!

Make it fun! As students read-aloud encourage them to become the character.

Speak in different tones, use props such as glasses and hats, act out as             they read.

General Teaching Tips

Give students as many opportunities to encourage creativity

Assignments such as power-points, poster boards, & technology                                  integration allows students to apply their own creative minds to their work and          think outside of the box.

Support teamwork in group-work settings.

With teamwork, the group has one set goal and works together to achieve                  the goal. With team work, each student has one intended duty with the                      occasional collaboration. This creates a balance in the classroom.

Aim to correct a problem while disciplining a student versus emphasizing the issue.

This will increase the chances of a child repeating the behavior.

Encourage students to take risks in the classroom.

Activities such as public speaking will allow a child to grow even if they feel                uncomfortable or hesitant to try.

Implement active learning as much as possible!

Active learning enables students to take ownership and involvement in the                 lesson. It will also create a memorable experience leading to retention of the             material.
