Running Record Form

Seven year old boy in the first grade reading A Great Day for UP by Dr. Suess

While reading, the student exhibited great emotion and interest into the text he was reading-aloud. He pointed out animals and illustrations he enjoyed, and often laughed. When he stumbled upon words he was unsure of he would try to sound the word out beginning with the beginning of the word. The student asked for assistance after attempting to sound the word out. Overall, this student did great reading at his level.

Instructional Ideas:

  • Use a fun pointer or finger device to keep him focused on the words.

  • Encourage reading in different character voices to keep the student interested. This also teaches characterization.

  • Return to the words he struggled with after completion of the book to see if he would be able to read them again without difficulty.
